If you’ve ever tried traveling with kids, you know it’s not all cute Instagram moments.
There are meltdowns in airport security lines, snack negotiations in four different languages, and that one time the boys straight up wrestled while waiting in line to board the plane.
But here’s the thing: it’s worth it. Every single time.
Over the years, I’ve learned a few things that make traveling with my boys not just manageable, but actually joyful — even when it’s messy.
1. Keep Routines (Loosely) Intact
Kids thrive on familiarity, so I always bring tiny anchors from home — their favorite bedtime book, a small pillow, or the same snack they love. We don’t keep a strict schedule, but bedtime rituals and morning systems keep them grounded no matter where we are.
2. Snacks Are the Real MVP
I don’t care if we’re flying across the world or driving to the next town — I never underestimate the power of a well-timed snack. It buys time, prevents hangry meltdowns, and sometimes even starts conversations with locals curious about what’s in our lunch box.
3. Make the Journey Part of the Adventure
If we’re on a train, I let them count tunnels. If we’re in an airport, we explore the art displays. Long drives turn into impromptu “I Spy” championships. The journey itself can hold just as much magic as the destination.
4. Let Go of “Perfect”
Some days, we see all the sights. Other days, the highlight is a gelato run and a long nap. When I stopped trying to recreate a Pinterest-perfect itinerary, travel became so much more fun for all of us.
Traveling with kids isn’t about having flawless days — it’s about collecting real, messy, unforgettable moments. The kind that stick with them (and you) forever
